Objectives of CSI:
- The purpose of crime scene investigation is to help establish what happened (crime scene reconstruction) and to identify the responsible person(s).
- To recognise physical evidence
- To preserve physical evidence
- To collect physical evidence
- To interpret physical evidence
- To reconstruct relevant physical evidence
- Determine whether a crime has been committed. If it is determined that there is no crime involved, or if the issue is one for the civil courts, law enforcement personnel have no responsibility.
- If a crime has been committed, determine whether it was committed within the investigators’ jurisdiction.
- Discovery & documentation of all facts pertaining to the complaint in question.
- Identify & eliminate suspects as a result of collected physical & testimonial evidence.
- Maintain a proper chain of custody to ensure that the collected evidence is admissible in court.
